What is Organ Donation?

Organ Donation is when a person chooses to give organ to save the lives of End Stage Organ Failure patients without any expectation.

What is Deceased Organ Donation?

Deceased Organ donation is the process of giving an organ or tissue at the time of donor’s death, for the purpose of transplantation to an organ failure patient.

What is Live Organ Donation?

Live donation is when a living person donates an organ (or part of an organ) to be transplanted to End Stage Organ Failure patients. The living donor can be a family member, such as a parent, child, brother or sister (live related donation).

Is Brain Stem Death legal Death?

Yes, brain-stem death – “the stage at which all functions of the brain-stem have permanently and irreversibly ceased” Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act THOTA) - is recognized as death in most countries of the world. The Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA) is the only legislation in India that confirms it as legal death, and provides a procedure for certifying it.

How are organs donated by family members of a brain dead donor allocated to organ failure patients?

Deceased donor organs are allocated to waitlisted patients as per their seniority in the TRANSTAN registry in a transparent manner duly following prescribed Govt. approved rules and protocols by TRANSTAN.

What are the Organs and Tissues that can be donated?

Organs: Heart, Lungs Liver, Kidney, Pancreas, Small bowel, Hands.

Tissues: Corneas, Skin, Heart Valves, Bone, Arteries, Ligaments, Tendons.

Is there any age limit for organ/ Tissue donation?

There is no age limit for Organ/Tissue donation.

Are the organs harvested from a donor transplanted immediately?

Yes, Solid Organs that are harvested from brain stem dead donors are transplanted immediately. Each organ has its own time within which the organs must be transplanted into the recipient.

Heart – 4 Hrs
Lung – 4- 6 hrs
Liver – 6 – 10 hrs
Kideny- 24 – 72 hrs
Pancreas– 12 to 18 hrs
Small Bowel – 6 – 12 hrs

What is whole body donation?

Whole Body Donation means donating your whole body after death for purpose of medical research and education. For whole body donation, one can contact the nearest Medical College Hospital, Anatomy department; fill up the donation form with signature from near relative.

Do I need to register for Organ donation?

There is no registration process for organ donation. You can fill the pledge form and kindly submit to us. Kindly find the organ donation pledge option in the website Menu, fill and submit. This will generate a donor card, kindly take a print out and keep with you.

Organs will be retrieved only when a person is brain stem dead due to road traffic accident/ any head injury/ Cerebral hemorrhage/Cerebral ischemia and is in the hospital on a ventilator. If his/her family members give consent for organ donation the organs will be retrieved and given to the needy patients, who are listed in the wait list.

How can I change my details in donor pledge card?

One can change the details by logging in with phone number and OTP.

Can I sell my organs?

It is against Indian Law to buy or sell any organs and it should not be done. Such an act is punishable under Indian Law with imprisonment.

How can I donate my eyes after death?

For donating eyes you can contact the nearest eye bank in your locality. There should be a written consent from the near relative with witness signature. The Eyes should be retrieved within 6 hours after death.

What is tissue donation?

Donating corneas, skin, bones are tissue donation.
Bone, Tendons and cartilage are used for reconstruction after an injury or during joint replacement surgery. Bone transplant can help patients suffering from bone cancer.
Heart Valves are used to help children born with defects and adults with disease or damaged valves.
Skin grafts are used to treat people with severe burns. The donated skin can be used as a temporary dressing to relieve the patient’s pain and discomfort. Skin can be donated within 6 hrs from the time of death. The minimum age limit should be 18 yrs. Skin is harvested from legs, thighs and back. The procedure takes only 30-40 mins.
While solid organs can be donated only from a brain stem dead person, tissues can be donated immediately after death.

Are donors screened to identify if they have transmissible disease and viruses such as COVID 19, HIV and Hepatitis?

All potential donors are screened to rule out transmissible disease and viruses such as COVID 19, HIV and Hepatitis.

Does the donation leave body disfigured?

No. Donation does not leave the body disfigured. Organs and tissues are always removed with great care and respect for the deceased donor.

Does a donor family have to pay the cost of donation ?

No. There is no question of any payment at all.
